FABtotum Dispensing Head v1



General info:
This custom dispensing head is developed for a FABtotum machine ( In the following video an example of solder paste dispensing on PCB is presented. See here also the communication test of the dispensing head with FABtotum. The example PCB is an FTDI circuit ( designed with KiCAD (1206 Imperial). The PCB is also milled with FABtotum using FlatCAM. An 20G 0.6mm ID 1.5'' dispensing needle is used to dispense diluted solder paste with IPA:
-Custom dispensing head is 3D printed with FABtotum.
-CAD files for dispensing head of TwinTeeth ( were adapted for FABtotum.
-Electronics consist of an Arduino Nano v3 with our firmware in order to control a 28BYJ-48-5V step motor with a ULN2003 driver.
-CAM software rpt2pnp ( was adapted to fit the needs of FABtotum.
Find all needed information (CAD files, Arduino firmware and CAM software) by clicking download button. You need also to print HDB support for FABtotum.

-3D printing: print all downloaded parts and the HDB support for FABtotum.
-Buying: FABtotum HDB kit, Arduino Nano v3, 28BYJ-48-5V, ULN2003, lead free solder paste, Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), M5 lead screw (pitch 0.8 mm).
-Firmware: Load .ino file to Arduino Nano.
-Integration: Connect all printed parts with screws, couplers, etc (more information in TwinTeeth). Then connect the dispenser with HDB support, the aluminium plate and the PCB of HDB kit with supplied screws. Add the electronics on the printed plate and connect them with cables (more information in HDB of FABtotum).
-CAM: Build supplied source code with "make" and generate .gcode and .ps files using your KiCAD rpt file as input (more information in rpt2pnp).
-Solder paste: Dilute lead free solder paste (keep safety measures) with IPA.
-Dispensing: Actions and meaning of commands can be found in supplied .ino file of Arduino Nano. Move in Jog page of FABtotum's fabui-colibri OS the needle right above the first pad of your PCB (see .ps file). Take generated gcode, paste it in the Jog page and execute it.

-The parts that were modified from TwinTeeth have Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License, which is marked in Basic Information.
-The modified rpt2pnp code has GNU General Public License v3.0

Next Steps:
-Lower the syringe and use 0.5 inch (instead of 1.5) syringe needle (or conical syringe tip), in order to reduce the pressure drop during paste extrusion. That would mean to cut the aluminium plate of HDB in order to lower the syringe.
-Thicken the Arduino Nano placeholder because it is easy to break.
-Modify CAM software in order to perform some dummy dispenses automatically, before starting dispensing on PCB, and make quicker movements.
-Build a pick and place head for a FABtotum machine.
