Description
This is a new, from scratch, design of a shadow lamp style commonly seen in a variety of formats including CNC, laser-cut and 3D printed.
For this one we wanted to make a highly detailed version of one of the most traditional designs, fully 3D printable, and held together with printed clips rather than glue, cable ties or other methods seen elsewhere.
We've printed it successfully in both standard PLA and copper enriched PLA. Printing using standard PLA produced a more durable result with less flex. The clips in this upload are designed with that material in mind.
Materials and methods
Print the following:
11 x panels (suggest printing with narrow brim to avoid warping at corners)
1 x base (use brim as above)
60 x clips (recommend printing in smaller batches initially to test tolerance is correct. Filament type and heat, e.g. even minor elephant foot, can affect the fit because they're so small)
1 x stand (optional draft version, but useful for taller 40mm light fittings. A better version is to follow, still work in progress. Recommend printing with supports.)
Assembly:
Work one panel at a time, attaching two clips to each edge and fitting the pieces together. Attach the base last!
For the light fitting, use a single source LED (e.g. some COB lights), and remove any pearl/reflective diffusers, otherwise multiple light sources will conflict and interfere with the shadow effect.
